Intercostal space:- The space in between two ribs are colled inercostal space.Eleven intercostal space on each side, last two spaces are open in front.
Features of space- Each directed dowenward & forward, Narrow towards vertebral column and towards sternum, widest at cossto-chndral junction, Posterior part is inter-ossesus while anterior part in intercartilaginous.
Typical intercostal space-Spaces between typical ribs & transversed by nervees & vessels & confined to thoracic wall.
Intercostal muscle- Arrenged in three sheets from outside inward that is External intercostal,Internal intwercostal and Transverses thoracis.
External intercostal- Origin: Lower border of the rib above.
Insertion: Outer lip of upper border of rib below.
Internal intercostal – Origin: Floor of costal groove of rib above.
Insertion: Supirior border of rib below ( innerto the attachment of external intercostal muscle)
