🩺 Trousseau’s Sign

Question: Trousseau’s sign is associated with:

Answer: (a) Hypocalcemia

📖 What is Trousseau’s Sign?

Trousseau’s Sign is a clinical sign of latent tetany caused by low calcium levels (hypocalcemia).

👉 It is tested by inflating a blood pressure cuff above the patient’s systolic pressure for about 3 minutes.

A positive Trousseau’s sign causes a characteristic carpopedal spasm (spasm of the hand and wrist).

📖 What is Hypocalcemia?

Hypo = Low
Calc = Calcium
emia = In the blood

👉 Hypocalcemia means a low level of calcium in the blood.

Common symptoms include:

  • Muscle cramps
  • Tingling around the mouth and fingers
  • Carpopedal spasm
  • Positive Trousseau’s sign
  • Positive Chvostek’s sign

🩺 What is Carpopedal Spasm?

Carpo = Wrist
Pedal = Foot

👉 It is an involuntary contraction of the muscles of the hand and sometimes the foot due to low calcium levels.

❌ Why Other Options Are Wrong?

(b) Hyponatremia
❌ Low sodium causes neurological symptoms but does not produce Trousseau’s sign.

(c) Hypercalcemia
❌ High calcium decreases neuromuscular excitability and does not cause Trousseau’s sign.

(d) Hypernatremia
❌ High sodium mainly causes dehydration and neurological changes, not carpopedal spasm.

🧠 Memory Trick:
Trousseau = Two Hands Curl
Think: Low Calcium → Carpopedal Spasm → Trousseau’s Sign

📌 Exam Tip: Both Trousseau’s sign and Chvostek’s sign are classic indicators of hypocalcemia, commonly seen after thyroid or parathyroid surgery.
