🫁 Heimlich Maneuver (Airway Obstruction)
Let’s understand this in a very simple way.
What is happening in airway obstruction?
Sometimes food or a small object gets stuck in the throat and blocks the airway.
Because of this, the person cannot breathe properly — this is an emergency.
What is the Heimlich maneuver?
It is a first aid technique where we give quick abdominal thrusts (pushes on the stomach area).
These thrusts create pressure inside the chest and lungs.
✅ Correct Answer: (a) Force air out of the lungs
How does it actually work?
When we push the abdomen suddenly:
- Air is forced out from the lungs
- This air pushes the stuck object out of the airway
- So the person can breathe again
Why other options are not correct?
- (b) Induce emptying of the stomach → ❌ Not the purpose. It is not used to make the person vomit.
- (c) Put pressure on the apex of the heart → ❌ No direct action on the heart.
- (d) All of the above → ❌ Only option (a) is correct.
Simple Exam Trick:
Airway blocked → Need to push object out → Force air out of lungs
📌 Note: Heimlich maneuver is used in conscious choking patients. In infants or unconscious patients, different techniques are used.
