Velamentous placenta is a condition related to abnormal insertion of the umbilical cord. It is an important topic in obstetrics and frequently discussed in high-risk pregnancy.

What is Velamentous Placenta?
In velamentous placenta, the umbilical cord does not attach directly to the placental disc. Instead, it is attached to the fetal membranes (amnion and chorion). The blood vessels then travel through the membranes before reaching the placenta.

Because these vessels are not protected by Wharton’s jelly in that portion, they are more vulnerable to compression or rupture.

From where does the word come?
The term “velamentous” is derived from the Latin word velamen, which means “covering” or “membrane.” So, velamentous insertion literally means the cord is inserted into the membranes instead of directly into the placenta.

Why is this clinically important?

• Risk of vessel rupture during labor
• Associated with vasa previa
• May lead to fetal distress or bleeding
• Requires careful monitoring during pregnancy and delivery

As nurses, it is important to understand this condition because early detection through ultrasound and proper monitoring can prevent serious complications.
