🚑 First Priority in Trauma Patient Management
When a person has a serious accident or injury, it is called trauma. Examples include road accidents, falls, burns, or any severe injury.
In such situations doctors and nurses must act very quickly. But they cannot do everything at once, so they follow a simple rule called ABC of emergency care.
What is ABC?
- A – Airway
- B – Breathing
- C – Circulation
This rule helps healthcare workers decide what should be treated first.
Why Airway comes first?
Airway means the passage through which air enters the lungs.
If the airway is blocked, the person cannot breathe and oxygen cannot reach the brain.
The brain can start getting damaged within a few minutes without oxygen. So before controlling bleeding or checking other injuries, the first thing is to make sure the airway is open.
✅ Correct answer: Maintenance of adequate airway
What nurses or doctors usually do first:
- Check if the patient is breathing
- Open the airway (head tilt–chin lift or jaw thrust)
- Remove any obstruction like vomit or blood
- Provide oxygen if needed
Why other options are not first priority?
- Control of hemorrhage is important but done after airway is secured.
- Maintaining blood pressure is related to circulation, which comes after airway and breathing.
- Ruling out spinal injury is also important but not before ensuring the patient can breathe.
Simple Exam Rule:
In trauma or any emergency always remember → ABC
A comes first → Airway.
