What is an aneurysm?
An aneurysm is a weak, balloon-like bulge that forms in the wall of a blood vessel. Over time the vessel wall becomes thin and weak, and sometimes it can burst.

When this happens in the brain, it is called a cerebral aneurysm.

What happens if it ruptures?
If the aneurysm bursts, blood leaks into the space around the brain. This space is called the subarachnoid space.

Most cerebral aneurysms occur in the arteries that form the Circle of Willis at the base of the brain.
